How to Care for Pebbled Leather

Pebbled leather is the most forgiving finish we work with. The raised grain hides the scuffs and fingerprints that show immediately on smooth leather, which is why we use it on pieces that get opened every single day.

Forgiving is not the same as indestructible. Here is what it actually needs.

Everyday Care

  • Wipe it down, occasionally. A dry or barely damp soft cloth, following the grain. That handles the majority of everyday marks.
  • Let spills dry naturally. Blot, do not rub, and keep the piece away from radiators and hairdryers. Forced heat is what causes leather to stiffen and crack.
  • Keep it out of direct sun. Prolonged sunlight fades color, and it does so unevenly. Pale colorways show it first.
  • Store it with something inside. An empty case can slump. Leaving contents in it, or stuffing it lightly, keeps the shape.

Things That Will Ruin It

  • Alcohol-based cleaners and wipes. These strip the finish. So do most household surface sprays.
  • Perfume and nail polish remover. Spray fragrance before you handle the case, not over it. Acetone will lift the color on contact.
  • Soaking. Never submerge a leather piece or put it under a running tap.
  • Overfilling. Forcing a zip closed stresses the stitching at the corners, which is where a case fails first.

Croc-Textured Finishes

The croc finishes behave much the same, with one addition: dust settles into the recesses of the pattern. A soft dry brush — a clean makeup brush works well — lifts it out without you having to touch the surface with anything wet.

Traveling With It

Pack the case in the middle of a bag, surrounded by soft items, rather than against the outer shell. Close the zip fully before packing so nothing catches. If you are checking a bag, decant anything liquid into sealed containers first — leather and leaked serum is a combination nobody recovers from gracefully.
