Choosing a Color You Will Still Like in Three Years

Fifteen colorways is generous when you know what you want and paralyzing when you do not. Here is how we would narrow it down.

Start With Where It Will Live

A case that sits out permanently on a dresser is a piece of furniture, and should be chosen the way you would choose one — against the room, not against your wardrobe. A case that lives inside a suitcase can be anything, because nobody sees it but you.

This one question eliminates about half the range for most people.

What Each Family Is Good At

  • Black and Espresso. The safe answer, and safe for a reason. They hide marks best, they travel without looking travel-worn, and they never look out of place. If it is a gift and you do not know the person's taste, choose one of these.
  • Pebble, Beige, Off White, and Ginger Brown. Warmer and softer in a room. Pale neutrals do pick up transfer from dark denim over time, so they suit a dresser better than a handbag.
  • Lilac, Lavender Pink, and Crush. The ones people actually smile at. Easier to justify as a second case than a first, and genuinely easier to find in a dark hotel room.
  • Burgundy, Navy, and Robin Blue. Color without volume. They read as considered rather than loud, and they wear like the dark neutrals.
  • Noir Croc, Espresso Croc, and Burgundy Croc. The most formal option. The texture does the work, so these look expensive in photographs and in person, and the pattern hides everyday marks better than any smooth finish.

A Test That Works

Think about the last three bags, wallets, or cases you bought. If they were all some version of the same neutral, buy the neutral — you already know what you reach for. If they were all different, you are someone who enjoys the choice, and the interesting colorway will not sit unused.

Buying More Than One

Plenty of people end up with two: a neutral that stays packed for travel, and something brighter that lives out at home. It is a more useful split than one case doing both jobs badly.
